Choosing the right dog bed for your pup is an important rite of passage… for you and, more importantly, for your pooch. But with the large selection of beds that are out there, it seems finding the right bed for a quick nap may take a lot of time. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming, in fact – it can be downright fun!
To begin with, if this will be your pup’s main bed, look for something that your puppy can grow into. The small cutesy beds are great as a secondary napping post but for your dog’s main squeeze, look for something with staying power.
Keep a look out for a washable bed or at the very least a washable cover. Even the best trained puppy will have a slip up or two and as pets age accidents are bound to happen. You’ll also want to look for a bed that’s not too high, not too intimidating, and with plenty of comfy cushioning. Remember that a dog’s bed provides rest and padding from flooring. You wouldn’t sleep on hardwood or tile floors every day, you’re back would be a mess! The same goes for your growing pet.
While it’s a great idea to find a bed that’s visually appealing and fits well with your décor, make sure you don’t sacrifice great comfort for great style. Also, keep an eye on your pet, does it prefer to feel all snuggly and cuddled or does it like space to stretch out? If your dog (or cat) likes space, consider a round bed without barriers to disturb its slumber.
If you’re dog is slightly older or if you’re buying one bed and that’s it (forever), then consider investing in a memory foam bed or heated dog bed as these can calm a dog suffering minor aches and pains associated with sore bones, joints, and arthritis.
If your home has a tendency to get hot, you may want to skip on the heated bed and consider a cooling dog bed. In fact, when the weather cooperates, take your pup to a pet store and have it test several beds, just like you would test your own mattress at a Sleepy’s store.
In the end, regardless of whether or not you buy the perfect bed it kind of goes without saying where your pup will really sleep… YOUR bed! Consider yourself lucky if it lets you share the pillow.
